A beer mug? I see more in this fine state.

My email fills daily with blasts from around the country to help me stay in-the-know. Today I received one about John Holcomb, the artist behind The United Plates series of prints.  Here is what he "sees" when he looks at our state lines ----->

Really?  So it got me searching for some "state art"...

Picture

Found this on Etsy, sweet. Artist is from St Paul ------>

Another Etsy find by a local artist...

One of my personal pieces, by local artist, Emily Johnson.

Purchased this print from Shoppe Local, (RIP).  It was part of the Collapse and Recovery-the 35W Bridge Poster Project.  It welcomes guests in our front hall.

So with all our fine artists, designers in this state, I'd love to see if you have pieces that reflect your vision of our state.  If so, send it!  Would love to highlight it here!

It's all about the love...

I started Radar by blogging in May of 2007. It began as a passion, a love of local, to share all-things local.  My first blog entry, "La Belle Vie - anyone can live it" was about, yes, La Belle Vie - one of my favorite restaurants then and still one of my favorites today.  It's many peoples favorites, proven in other blogs, Facebook & Twitter mentions, and of course, internationally by the James Beard Foundation.

Since then my 208 blog topics have remained about local love.  Topics filled with recommendations for my audience to use as a resource, a guide, a source of inspiration. Unique content?  Maybe a few.  Content found in other blogs, newspapers, magazines?  Absolutely.

So I've been thinking, why is it hard at times for me to find the passion to blog?   Duh, with one click you can connect to millions of passionate people sharing their love of restaurants, food, shopping, cooking, photography, dogs, etc.  And you can file, bookmark, mark "favorite" who's voice, style you choose to read and connect with.  My best-friend and husband reminded me, I have Radar because it's completely fun, it's energizing and it connects great people to great goings-on, businesses, services and people.  And as social media keeps exploding, there are many local resources that I "favorite" and file under shopping, culture, dining, etc. I'm not competing with these experts, nor do I want to!  These wonderful wizards can be found along my blog sidebar ----->

So I've done less blogging due to the simple fact, content is out there and I'm not here to rewrite what exists and exists really well.  I do though, like many, re-Tweet, share via Facebook something I've read or heard that is worthy of telling my followers.

So like this blog post, I strive to fill my posts with passion in each word and the voice that is heard.  Radar is not here to fill a page, nor to repeat what may be well-presented elsewhere.  Radar is about how it began, sitting on a bar stool at the lovely La Belle Vie nibbling and sipping on a Monday night and realizing what a treat local life is.  And then bursting to tell anyone and everyone in the Twin Cities to give themselves the same treat...

And so, 3 1/2 years later, Radar will continue from where it began - to enjoy and share, ala La Belle Vie,  "The Beautiful Life".

"Kids Get Crafty for Christmas", by guest blogger, Jen Gilhoi

Jen Gilhoi reached out to me after reading about Radar in Metro Magazine.  She found our energy for the Twin Cities to be a match, so perfect that our names are too.  Anyway, Jen is a busy Mom of two and her passion for our cities is reflective in the activities she chooses for her family. And she blogs about it too: Edamomie.  So I said, "please feel free to share your local mom perspective with my followers", since many of you are parents.  So here's another, "JenOnTheRadar" with her local MomPOV...

"Rather than buying gifts to give on your kids’ behalf, why not let them be part of creating or selecting the right gift for the right person?

Head to the 50th and France area in Minneapolis for handmade, creative, quality gifting ideas that make for a fun activity for the creators and a special gift for the receivers.

Paint Your Plate has options from coffee mugs and serving plates to flower pots and incense holders. We selected a large teapot, and while it was $45, the activity kept me and both kids busy for 1.5hours. All the paint, firing in the kiln and supplies are included and the overview of techniques – stenciling, splatter, brush, polka-dots – were easy to understand.  They have special evening deals - Wednesday is kids night and Friday is date night.  Be ware the 7-10 day lead time and make your masterpiece by December 15 to be sure your gift is ready in time for Christmas.

The Bead Monkey allows children to create their own handmade gifts – this option comes without the mess! Choose different sizes and colors that represent ideas they have about the gift recipient. The bracelet I received years ago (created at The Bead Monkey) was totally mismatched color-wise, but I wear it, love it and get compliments on it frequently. Bonus - it goes with everything.

Sur La Table, on the SW corner of 50th and France, has smaller – yet quality – products to make for unique, inexpensive gifts.  Much of the functionality of these little gems like the Microplane Herb Mill for $24 and the 3-piece bamboo cutting board set on sale for $19, make daily life more simple and aesthetically pleasing.  Also let your little ones pick out gifts with personality like aprons, napkins, magnets and more.  These can be paired with homemade baked goods too for a thoughtful, part-homemade gift.

50th and France has Thursday night store hours on December 16 and 23 until 8:00p.m.  On Saturdays in December from 1:00-3:00p.m., enjoy reindeer sleigh rides and carolers while you shop. All inspiration to shop local, feed the reindeer and get crafty this holiday season at 50th and France. http://www.50thandfrance.com/"

So many restaurants, so little time...

There is an explosion of new dining options in Mpls!  So many that I admit I haven't had time to hit them all!  But you all need to know about them, support them, consider buying a GC for someone on your list at one of them...
Picture
blackbird
Now re-open after the famous fire.  New space is much more open, airy, lively.  Menu larger with added Asian items.  Nice addition to a neighborhood that needed a welcoming venue.

the inn

The guys from St Paul's hip Strip Cub Meat & Fish steakhouse bring their love across the river.  A unique touch on the drink menu, a "bump and a beer".

Picture
jack's
With a face lift of the space and menu from the former Java Jack's, this adds another little darling to the ever-growing 46th St in So. Mpls.  Reasonably-priced homely items, with Sunday night "hot dish" night perfect for the whole family.  Long bar makes it a great place to stop in for a glass of wine and cheese.  Now if only Pattiserie 46 could open for late-night dessert!

pizzeria lola
I've yet to have pizza at Lola cuz we stopped too late.  But I saw the most beautiful cooper wood burning oven & tried Ann's house-made vanilla soft serve ice cream with extra-virgin olive oil & fleur de sel!

in-season
Executive Chef Don Saunders is back! London-trained Saunders made his name cooking unfussy but spectacular French food at the critically acclaimed AuRebours and Fugaise.
In Season is the new platform for his creativity, and the philosophy driving In Season is reflected in its name.

Picture
town hall tap
Heard the wait was 80 minutes the night I was going to stop in, that says a lot about what the hood was craving - good brewery bar with tasty food on a cozy corner of Mpls.

Picture
psycho suzi's
Can't say it better myself: "Paradise has a new address - Suzi has a posh new pad, but it’s full of the same silly crap you’ve always loved. Lounge about on our huge riverfront patio in the middle of the Northeast Arts District, and you won’t want to go home. Peruse our site for the lowdown, then get your tail down here."
